Expenses
How to use this calculator
- Add an expense row for each cost, choosing a category and entering the amount.
- Enter the number of travelers and trip days.
- Press Calculate.
- Review the total, per-person, and per-day breakdowns plus the category summary.
The formula
Total = sum of expenses; per person = total ÷ travelers; per day = total ÷ days
Worked example
Lodging $400 + food $200 + activities $150 = $750 total. For 2 travelers over 3 days, that's $375 per person, $250 per day, or $125 per person per day.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I budget for a vacation?
List every expected cost by category — lodging, transportation, food, activities — and add a 10–15% buffer for surprises. This calculator totals everything and breaks it into per-person and per-day figures, which makes it easy to compare against your savings or split fairly with travel companions.
What does the per-person-per-day number tell me?
It's your trip's 'burn rate' — what each traveler effectively spends per day. It's the most useful number for comparing trips ('that beach week was $180/person/day vs $240 for the city trip') and for sanity-checking against your normal daily spending.
How should we split costs with friends?
Enter the full shared costs (lodging, rental car, group activities) and the number of travelers — the per-person figure is each person's fair share. For costs only some people share, like a scuba trip two of you take, calculate those separately or add them as their own line and divide by the smaller group.
What travel costs do people forget to budget?
The classics: airport parking or rideshares, tips, travel insurance, baggage fees, resort fees, and foreign transaction fees. Food is the most underestimated category — budget more like your eating-out spending than your grocery spending. Add a buffer line so surprises don't wreck the trip.
